140 review

140 is a very minimalistic & challenging platformer whose main gimmick is tying the platforming aspect to the beat of electronic music. It is a very simple concept tied to a rather enjoyable soundtrack & simple art design but one that I rather enjoyed as a pick & play game.

Controls & mechanics are simple to pick & learn, with simple WASD movement & Space Bar to jump or Left Analogue & ‘A’ button if using a controller, you’ve already mastered one half of them game. The other half is listening to the beat of the music & timing it with whatever platform or hazard stands in your way. Your goal is to reach the end of the level & eventually a boss, to mix things up. On your path , you will occasionally come across seemingly no way to continue & a small orb. This are you ‘keys’ to continue, always changing the music & colors to fit this new unlocked “area”. This is pretty much the entirety of the game, with no collectibles to worry about or even ‘Time Attack’ modes it is a one & done sort of game unless you are one for speedruns.

The soundtrack is pretty amazing & enjoyable & having most all things react to the beat, from the platforming itself to backgrounds is an enjoyable touch to an otherwise simple game. Colors are well & bright but nothing too harsh on the eyes to distract you from those critical jumps or annoy you on long play sessions. Controls are nice & responsive & checkpoints are forgiving enough. Difficulty ramping as up you go through each stage.

All in all, 140, is a very simple game that is overlooked for its simplicity. It has been in plenty of bundles & I am sure plenty of you have dismissed it. For a less than 100mb download it certainly entertained me for a fair while. Being able to pick & play it certainly helps. Give 140 a go for a few minutes.
