Felix The Cat review

Felix the Cat is a rather easy but charming platformer in which you travel through different worlds in order to save the titular hero’s girlfriend, Kitty, from the mad Professor & that is as much story you will get. You will travel through 8 different worlds ranging from a “Green Hill zone” like area to pyramids, the artic, a tropical paradise & even space. How you go about each varies from stage to stage, from the traditional platforming to flying & swimming to a SHMUP lite stage in the later levels with an auto scrolling screen which could be considered the hardest part of the game.

Felix Cat Magic

Enemies are nothing amazing, most are just pallet swaps with a tendency to walk back and forth while a few can fly and others can fire projectiles. Bosses are fought in a Mega Man like boss arena after reaching the end of the 3rd area of each zone, much like regular enemies some bosses are repeated with little variance in attack patterns. There is little in the matter of secrets outside shooting specific clouds that are shaped as the Professor, but they wield nothing but 1Ups.

Felix Cat Boss

You fight enemies using your magic bag, which starts with a basic “Sucker Punch” glove. Scattered randomly among the token pick-ups are power ups that change the way you attack. Depending on whether the stage is a platforming, underwater or flying stage you change from a magic performing cat to driving a car & using honking your horn to a hot air balloons on flying stages to a submarine on under water ones. Each time you get hit you lose a power up stage much like Mario, until you are left with the basic form which is the “kill” stage. Each power up is timed but can be replenished by picking up milk or another power up, again these are hidden within the pick-up tokens.
Music is pretty cool & pleasant to listen to but the sound effects can be grating after a bit, though that might vary from person to person. Controls are a bit on the floaty side & can lead to some annoying hits & deaths. Ultimately, the game is about 40-50 minute & that is on the somewhat easy side. With a variety of stages, power ups & charming music I would recommend this game to anyone especially parents that want to share an old school experience with their children.
