Baba Is You review

Baba Is You, a very charming puzzle game in which the concept of “thinking outside the box” is fully embraced. Its adorable appearance & opening level betray the myriad of brain-bending puzzles that will quickly cascade as you solve a level & a couple more opening up. Who would have thought that the simple concept of pushing things & the usage of words would make such a brain busting game.

From the get go, you get dropped into a puzzle with little to no explanation about much & your only hints are small phrases & words strewn about the level. Baba is You, Push, is, WIN, etc. are your only hints & as you might quickly learn by accidentally pushing the Baba out of YOU, rules as well. Oops. Luckily a rewind will let you undo that & any other move you make as well a quick restart for the bigger problems. Now that you’ve quickly learned not to mess with some things in life, you can explore your options in your quest to reach the goal & escape this boxy purgato- cough. Perhaps any lose modifiers strewn about the play area? You bet. Maybe enough for you to make your own rules? Now you are getting it.

It is a game that teaches by doing & you will be definitely be learning & doing a lot as it will throw a myriad more ways to fry your brain as the difficulty quickly ramps up. In some levels you might have a clearly defined goal & in others you must make your goal. Each “world” has its own set of themed levels which introduces a new modifier to play with & as you progressively continue it will be integrated into more & more levels. While it can be challenging, it won’t throw everything at you from the get-go thankfully.

Artwise the game is simple pixelated graphics, nothing too fancy but adorable nonetheless. One thing that was appreciated are the darker in color backgrounds that are easy on the eyes for extended play sessions. Music is chiptuney electronic… or something, it is good & relaxing in any case.

All in all, Baba is YOU, is a nice & simple yet challenging puzzle game. Its pick up & play nature does lend itself well for the Nintendo Switch though it is also available on PC for Windows, Mac & Linux so no lack of choices in regards to finding a portable solution. For 15$ it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I certainly got my money’s worth thought the game sure fights back with its brain-bending puzzles. Ultimately, I definitely recommend Baba is YOU for fans of puzzle games or those than want to stretch the limits of “thinking outside the box”.
